I

I Ching- The Chinese book of changes. It contains methods and explanations of prophecy. Also known as Yi King.

Imp- An evil spirit or small or minor demon. Some texts consider imps to be benign, playful spirits.

Incarnate- Embodied in flesh, to exist on the physical plane. Any living creature.

Incubus- A demon that rapes or has sex with women. In actuality, inhuman spirits do not have a gender. They can appear however they choose. Therefore, the same spirit can also be a “succubus” which has sex with men.

Indigeny, Law Of- This is a sub-law that means that a spirit is indigenous to a location. It is a sub-law in that it usually explains why either of the first two laws work. However, it can stand on its own regarding the cause of haunting phenomena.

Infernal Region- Place where devils and demons have been banished to. (See Hell and Hades.)

Infestation- Condition which occurs when evil spirits inhabit a location. This results in a haunting situation. The spirit has “dug in” at this point. Infestation in a person is called possession.

Inhuman Spirit- The spirit of a creature that has never lived on the physical plane. Good spirits are Angels; evil ones are demons and devils. These spirits are capable of doing many things on the physical plane and to humans but they cannot take away a persons free will. They can, however, tempt humans for good or bad depending on which type of spirit is involved.

Invitation, Law Of- Belief that a particular activity can result in a haunting, such as using an Ouija Board. In this case, you are actually “inviting” a spirit into your life by asking it to communicate with you. Another example would be worshipping Satan.
