IS GHOST HUNTING SINFUL? I think this is an area that causes a great deal of confusion for many, so let us take a look at it. The Bible makes no bones about it, necromancy is a sin. What exactly is necromancy? It is trying to gain knowledge or some favor via the dead. It is a sin and for good reason: there are hordes of evil entities out there and to come in contact with them can only have tragic results. However, ghost hunting is not necromancy. Well, don't Ouija boards, Tarot readings and mediums come under that category? Technically, yes they do. If that is the case, then trying to capture EVP's is sinful too, right? Not necessarily. Motive carries some weight here. When I am working a case where a family is being afflicted by unseen forces, I will most certainly attempt to capture EVP's. Why am I doing it? Well, I'm certainly not looking for the winner of the 5th at Belmont. I am also not trying to get answers about the meaning of life or what happens after death. The latter would be referred to as the occult, a word that means hidden. What I am trying to do is ascertain whether a spirit is there, what kind of spirit it is and if it is human, trying to find out who he/she was. Why? I do that because it may show the way to end the haunting. If it is a human entity causing the problem, getting its name or finding out what it wants can be a real clue to solving the case. It may also result in helping a trapped or confused spirit cross over to where it belongs. In that case, you have done two good deeds: 1) You stop the haunting. 2) You help a spirit cross over. That is a worthwhile task to be sure. However, what if the spirit does not want to cross over? There is some debate as to whether you can force a human spirit to leave a location. Certainly if the spirit means no harm, it would be difficult to force it out. Now if the spirit is doing evil things, prayer and blessings may well work because you are stopping evil. There is always the change that a demon is playing puppet master with the human spirit. In some cases, the demon will leave once it thinks people are on to him. On the other hand, if he chooses to stay, prayer, a Mass or even an exorcism may be in order. I have seen cases where a cantankerous spirit was willing to change his nasty ways after the family put their foot down. He probably stayed but he never bothered the family again. For all we know, we all have human spirits around us. They may simply choose to stay in the background. That may not be the most pleasing thought to some. Simple ghost hunting that does not involve necromancy is not sinful. Ghost clubs abound where groups gather together, show off their photographs and have lively discussions about their experiences. Yes, some will have "the one that got away." However, this is all done for fun and I cannot imagine God having a problem with that. Dabbling in the occult is completely different from ghost hunting. Dabbling is both sinful and dangerous.
