MULTI-LAYERED HAUNTINGS

Although not encountered often, some of the trickiest cases to solve are what I refer to as multi-layered hauntings. In a multi-layered haunting, you will have several spirits operating in a location. The most interesting thing is that in this type of haunting, the various spirits are not aware of each other. You may have a case where there are five spirits present. Two of those spirits may be together while the other three are unaware of the others. The two who are together will not be aware of the other three. Complicated indeed.

How is this possible? As with anything to do with the paranormal world, there is no way to be positively sure why anything happens. All we have are theories. They are well thought out theories but theories nonetheless. Here is what we believe. The spirits are from different times and they vibrate at different levels. There could also be a sort of rip in time whereby some spirits are indigenous to the location while others come and go. Whatever the reason, it makes for an interesting and at times, frustrating case.

There was one case I worked back a few years ago. We initially thought there were two human spirits operating in the house and possibly something inhuman puppeteering the two. The case would run on for two years with periods of inactivity followed by periods of heavy activity. The two living occupants were quite frightened, as you would imagine. However, we had one thing going for us: the two spirits were not afraid to put their voices on tape.

That proved to be pivotal or so we thought. From the voices, some of which were clear as day, we were able, with the families help to identify the two human spirits. We still suspected the possibility of a non-human entity, especially after the body of Christ mysteriously disappeared from around the neck of my partner. The cross remained intact but the body was missing. We knew she had it on when we entered the room because it was on video tape. After running the camcorder for a few minutes, we saw that the body was missing. Desecration or asporting a religious object can be a manifestation of a demonic force. However, that was all we had to go on.

We went to work on the two spirits and that proved to be quite challenging. We also had a second problem: the family was being bothered at their job as well. At first, we assumed the spirits at home were simply following the family around. One thing seemed different though, the dominant spirit at the job site was decidedly mean. The spirits in the house were bothersome to be sure but they were hardly malevolent in nature. This other one was nasty. Since we knew the identity of the first two and since they were not shy about talking on tape, we asked them about the third spirit. They stated they knew of no other spirit in the house or the job site. Was this our inhuman entity? Demonic entities vibrate at a lower level so that could explain why the two did not know about him. That being the case, we knew we were not dealing with a puppeteer. I told you it gets confusing.

Taking it one at a time, we were able to perform a spirit rescue on one of the two human entities. After many hours of work, he did cross over and the relief in the air was quite noticeable. Since the one who spent most of his time on the jobsite was negative, we decided he needed to be thrown out. We used some religious prayers along with commanding the spirit to leave in Christ’s name and after two sessions, he was gone too. Eventually the third spirit would convey a message and once that was done, the haunting ended. While it was a long and at times frustrating case, it was a great learning experience. We had a spirit who was stuck, one who wanted no one else on his land and one who had an important message to convey.

So what makes a haunting multi-layered? In the above case, we were able to determine that the nasty spirit once owned the property on which the business was built. It just so happens that the family had another haunting going on at the same time. Time seemed to make a difference in that case. The two human spirits had not been dead for long. The nasty one had died some fifty years earlier.

From that, we can logically theorize that a multi-layered haunting is most likely to occur in a very old house. Even that has to be qualified because the land on which a house sits could have housed an old house or was once a cemetery. Yet time still plays a factor. You could conceivably create a multi-layered haunting accidentally although your luck would have to be rotten. Let’s say that you are being haunted in a fairly new house. You go to an antique store and something compels you to by a certain piece. Along with the high price tag comes a free gift; an attached spirit. You bring it home and now you have two spirits, unaware of each other but both haunting you.

How do you stop a multi-layered haunting? It takes time and patience. First you have to determine that it is that type of haunting and unfortunately, the way you usually find out is by removing one spirit only to find another. Of course, you could make the mistake of thinking the first spirit never left. Now you have to study the spirits actions and patterns. Does it seem different? Is it doing things it never did before? You might not know that because whatever it did, you probably blamed the first spirit for. More importantly then, are there things it is not doing that used to occur? If that is the case, you can now start thinking multi-layered. Of course it would be helpful if the spirits appeared to you. Then you could at least get an idea of how many you are dealing with. Unfortunately, paranormal investigators don’t usually get that lucky.

Discernment is so important. If you think you have a multi on your hands, you start by trying to remove them all at once. Failing that, you peel them off one layer at time until you finally end the problem. It is not easy and it is why I believe so many hauntings never get resolved. Attempts were made to get rid of a spirit and it may have worked but you don’t know that because there are others there. If there is any good news here, it is that this is not your average haunting and it is rare. I’ll say this, if you get one, you won’t forget it.
